Fun with succulents

Hens and chickensSucculents–those chubby, rubbery plants originally hailing from arid climes–are my go-to plants when I want to fill a space with texture, not have to worry about their maintenance and, I’ll admit it, add a bit of humour.

Maybe it’s their otherworldly shapes and colours. When succulents are planted in unlikely places, their oddness stands out even more, delightfully.

Here are 5 of my favourite ways to have fun with succulents.

Live roof doghouse

I saw this live roof dog house at a local garden centre. I love the idea though I don’t think it would survive an Ontario winter. But, if you’re flush with cash, you could create a new roof every spring.

Dry water fountain

For a little irony in the garden, just plant succulents, those desert denizens, in the basin of a water fountain.

Bird bath

Planting succulents in a bird bath is equally funny. Maybe not so much for the birds.

Sphere container

This container would’ve looked amazing if the homeowner had simply planted a few succulents in the container the conventional way but the succulent-covered sphere takes this arrangement to a whole new level.

Every summer, I create a new 'hairdo' for this container–one of my favourites. Succulents always seem work best, whether I'm aiming for an elegant updo or funky dreds or both.
